Budoshin Ju-jitsu in Middletown, CT / 30 Days FREE!

For the first time since we opened our doors in 2002, the Modern Self-Defense Center is offering a Traditional Martial Art:

Budoshin Ju-jitsu

A traditional school of Japanese Ju-jitsu methods

But OK, wait a minute.  I thought the Modern Self-Defense Center was all about "contemporary, effective training methods".  Well, YES we are.  In fact, that's exactly what we do here -- and nothing else.  But there are lots of different skills to develop, from kickboxing to grappling, and some people really LIKE the traditional atmosphere of the Asian Martial Arts.  So why can't we have both?

The Budoshin Ju-jitsu classes at MSDC are the best of both worlds:  a traditional Martial Arts classroom run by instructors who have practical experience in a broad range of self-defense skills.  Our instructors bring a "big picture" perspective to all our classes, backed up by many years of training and high achievements in a variety of Martial Arts!  We have run classrooms of all kinds, from fun & friendly.

Why might someone choose this traditional format?  Here are some reasons it may appeal to you:

  • An opportunity to learn a traditional Japanese Art, in its original cultural context
  • Experience the focus, clarity, and meditative qualities of formal Japanese training
  • Expose yourself to a basic Japanese vocabulary
  • Learn about historical Martial Arts principles, while developing the corresponding fighting techniques
  • And for our students who are already training in other programs at MSDC, cross-training in Budoshin Ju-jitsu will help connect the pieces among several different disciplines!

So what's the story with Budoshin Ju-jitsu?  What kind of things will we be training in class?

In order to discuss traditional Japanese Ju-jitsu, let's put it into historical context for a moment.  Ju-jitsu was the primary weaponless fighting style during the Edo period (1603-1868), which is the time period most people associate with the icon of Japanese warfare, the Samurai.  Ju-jitsu skills were meant to be blend with the fighting arts of the Sword and other weapons, and they represented a vast mix of punching, kicking, throwing, striking, grappling, choking, and joint locking techniques with very little rules.

What's the difference between Japanese Ju-jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

In the late 1800's, Japan entered an era of rapid political change, and Ju-jitsu was as effected as everything else.  In 1882, a system called "Kano ju-jitsu" split off, which was later renamed "Judo".  This system focused primarily on the grappling methods of ju-jitsu (a couple decades later, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would descend from Judo as it began to spread around the world).  In the early 20th century, other styles broke away from mainstream Japanese Ju-jitsu, including Morihei Ueshiba's Aikido.  Another offshoot during this period was James Mitose's "Kenpo ju-jitsu",  which his student, William Chow, later renamed "Kenpo Karate", and passed along to his student, Ed Parker, who would launch American Kenpo Karate), as well as Israeli Krav Maga, which is based on boxing, wrestling, and ju-jitsu.

In the end, Judo and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu focus on grappling only, and in a format that is appropriate for sport competition.  And don't get us wrong: the throwing skills learned in Judo and the groundfighting skills of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are both top notch!  Budoshin (and other Japanese ju-jitsu styles) focus on a broad mix of all the different elements.  Check this out:

What does Japanese Ju-jitsu training include?  It has pieces of all of its descendant styles:

  • Striking techniques similar to Karate,
  • Throws, pins, chokes, and locks like Judo,
  • Blending and off-balancing akin to Aikido,
  • Traditional weapons training,
  • and a slew of techniques unique to their Ju-jitsu origins

What about the name "Budoshin"?  What is unique to that system?

Japanese Martial History is filled with a rich history of ethics and traditions related to "Budo", which means the "way of the warrior".  Many values and virtues are a part of this warrior ethos, including ideals relating to discipline, mercy, respect, and honor.  The name "Budoshin" means to possess "a spirit of Budo".

"Ju-jitsu" (which is often also spelled jujutsu or jiu-jitsu, depending on the style) is typically translates as the "Gentle Art", though a slightly more accurate translation would be to call it the "Art of Nonresistance".  The technical focus in Ju-jitsu training is to blend with the attacker's efforts, rather than fighting them.  If he pushes, you pull (thus incorporating the strength of his push into your technique), and so on.  Rather than wasting energy fighting against his strength, Ju-jitsu students learn to take advantage of the opportunities an attacker presents.

Here's a video to whet your appetite:  Professor George Kirby demonstrates a sampling of the Budoshin Ju-jitsu style on Youtube (click here)

Krav Maga in Middletown CT / 30 Days FREE!

Coming Soon (January 2012) to the Modern Self-Defense Center in Middletown, Connecticut:

Krav Maga

The no-nonsense, hard hitting Martial Art of the Israeli Military

The phrase "Krav Maga" translates as "Contact Combat" in English.  Krav Maga was developed by Imi Lichtenfeld, who developed it from boxing, wrestling, traditional ju-jitsu methods, gymnastics, and military training.  For the first 15 years (starting in 1944) Krav Maga was kept secret, trained only by the Israeli Defense Force.  But in 1968, when Imi Lichtenfeld retired from the IDF, civilians were finally given access to this devastatingly effective method of training.

Because it was designed for soldiers who will face combat, Krav Maga was designed with some special features:

  • It takes less time for you to learn Krav Maga than traditional Martial Arts
  • You need only a small number of techniques, rather than hundreds
  • You will develop power and aggressiveness in the face of danger
  • You will remember Krav Maga techniques easily, even under the stress of an assault situation

Krav Maga training includes devastatingly effective techniques for a number of critical areas, including defenses against punches and kicks, chokeholds, grabs, abductions, carjackings, armed assaults using sticks, bats, knives, and even firearms, as well as 1-on-1 and multiple attacker combatives.

Krav Maga is a modern Martial Art based on the following no-nonsense principles:

  • Target the body's most vulnerable areas (Hurt him, no matter how big and strong he is)
  • Make your defense and offense simultaneous (Hit him as soon as you can!)
  • Neutralize the assault as quickly as possible (End the danger, NOW!)
  • Maintain awareness of your surroundings (Exit to safety)

If you don't have time to waste and want to jump right into the best hands-on self-defense training you can find, give us a call today at (860) 704-9553.  We answer our phones 24/7 so that you don't have to wait.  Set up an appointment to come in for your FREE private lesson, 1-on-1 with an instructor on our expert staff, so that you can see and feel what Krav Maga training can do for you.

MSDC first offered Krav Maga classes back in 2002, and they were immensely popular.  Take advantage of this hard-hitting style's return to Middletown by giving us a call today!

Martial Arts for Kids in Middletown CT / 30 Days FREE!

Confidence, self-esteem, discipline, physical fitness and self-reliance – Are these traits you’d like to ensure your child develops? Would you like them to learn teamwork and partnership skills while having FUN?

Then keep reading because:

You’ve just found the ultimate Martial Arts Classes for Kids in the Northeast!

That’s a bold statement and here’s why we make it:

Our unique program, called Adaptive Movement Martial Arts (or AMMA for short), was created as a perfect synthesis of physical, mental, emotional, and social developmental tools, wrapped up in a program of the most effective hands-on self-defense training methods!  The AMMA instructors (you'll hear about them later) have an unmatched level of experience working with young people -- in schools, in mentorship programs, and in the Martial Arts.  They have dedicated their lives and passion to the pursuit of teaching excellence in modern Martial Arts, as well as life-skills that will send your child soaring towards his or her true potential!

What will my Child Learn?

Our Adaptive Movement Martial Arts (AMMA) kids program stands on 5 Pillars:

  1. Be Safe
  2. Be a Hero
  3. Make Healthy Choices
  4. Aim High
  5. Be Active

These pillars build confident, leadership-oriented young people with open minds and healthy bodies.  Let's learn more about the 5 Pillars of the AMMA program:

Pillar #1     Be Safe -- Effective Self-Defense

Martial Arts Classes for Kids in ConnecticutOur kids learn the most cutting-edge techniques and training methods for real world self protection. The AMMA curriculum is designed around Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do Concepts (all of our instructors are certified JKD Instructors).  JKD isn't a single Martial Art, but a way of training many different methods, and discovering the best ways for each individual student to protect himself or herself. AMMA students learn boxing, kickboxing, trapping, clinch (standing wrestling), ground grappling, and much more!  From the esoteric French Kickboxing style of Savate to the Battle-tested weapons methods of Filipino Kali, Arnis, and Escrima; and from the cage-proven grappling of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the gentle tumbling methods of Aikido, Judo, Gymnastics, and Parkour; our students receive the best hands-on training in a broad spectrum of skills.

The number one goal of the program is to give each student skills that he or she could use today -- not at the end of ten years of practice. Starting from the very first day, AMMA kids learn how to stand up for themselves in the face of a bully, and to protect themselves with real-world, effective techniques.

At the end of the day, Martial Arts skills should make the students SAFER -- safer from bullying, safer from adults, and even safer from falling and other accidents.   This is the number one priority in the AMMA program:  to make your child safe

Pillar #2     Be a Hero -- Develop Character

We didn't choose the name "Heroes" by accident.  The AMMA program is built around character development lessons that teach our children to be confident leaders, and to help make a difference -- a real, positive change -- in the world around them.

We know that using the word "Hero" when talking to kids conjures up images in their minds of Comic-book Superheroes, complete with costumes and superpowers.  But we also think that's a good place to start a conversation with children about what heroes REALLY do -- and to help give them ideas about how they can demonstrate heroic character, without the ability to fly or matching cape & tights.

Starting at white belt, our Heroes will learn what it means to be a hero (or heroine) in real-world terms.  Their lessons and assignments will cross-over into their lives outside our walls: at home, at school, and beyond. Lesson 1 begins at White Belt:  "Heroes help others."  Our kids will practice being helpful to each other, to their family at home, to their friends and classmates at school, and more.  Parents and teachers are given means to report successful acts of Hero Behavior outside of the Martial Arts academy, and students will receive recognition in our program for their accomplishments.

And as students progress through the system, each belt rank has a new accompanying character trait to be practiced outside the Martial Arts school.  It's a unique feature of our AMMA program, and it's something you won't see elsewhere!

Pillar #3     Healthy Choices -- Substance Free

Healthy choices are a key component of AMMA.  One of the biggest lessons we emphasize with our kids is the importance of avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, and other drugs. It's a critical factor in the healthy development of our students, and it makes a huge difference in their successes as they grow up.  The AMMA program builds values around healthy behavior -- helping kids to realize that in order to succeed, they need to make positive choices.

Included in this lesson is a message of responsibility:  young people must learn to take ownership for their choices -- celebrating the good ones, and learning from mistakes.

Pillar #4     Aim High -- Goal Setting in Education

It's important for our students to set high goals, both inside and outside the Martial Arts academy.  While our students strive to punch harder, kick higher, and someday earn the rank of Black Belt, it's equally important that they read more, study harder, and set high goals when it comes to their education

Pillar #5     Be Active -- Physical Fitness

The final pillar of our program is our emphasis on physical fitness.  With today's overwhelming access to television, video games, computers,  and smartphones, it's a real struggle to keep children from becoming "couch potatoes". Childhood obesity and related ailments have more than tripled in the last 30 years.

Our program makes physical activity fun and exciting, turning healthy movement into a reward of its own

Because our instructors also work in local schools, we are able to keep updated on current methods of Physical Fitness Testing, including both State and National Fitness Standards.  The exercises in our warm-ups, drills, games, and cool-downs are built with these School Fitness standards in mind -- this means that by having fun and playing games in our classes, your child will improve his or her performance on School Fitness tests!  It's the best and most exciting approach to keeping fit, staying active, and eliminating the anxiety of fitness testing.

build confidence to prevent bullying with Martial Arts classes

Are you ready for your child to develop confidence, physical fitness, and self-defense skills in our program?

    1. Be Safe
    2. Be a Hero
    3. Make Healthy Choices
    4. Aim High
    5. Be Active

Who will be teaching my child?

This is the biggest question every parent should ask.  Any school might claim the ability to teach a program like AMMA, but what are their credentials?  Is it just hype, or can they back it up?  Our instructors walk the walk instead of just talking the talk.  We're absolutely certain that no other school can match our exceptional staff:

Chris Wright-Martell - MSDC Head Instructor

Chris Wright-Martell - MSDC Head InstructorChris Wright-Martell has been teaching young people since he himself was one.

He began his Martial Arts journey with a year of Judo at 6 years old.  At age 8, he began training Kenpo Karate at the Middletown Kenpo Karate Studio, where he found his home for nearly 20 years.  At 11 years old, he was accepted into an experimental program to train Assistant Instructors.  He reached the rank of Black Belt at 16, while teaching nearly 20 hours each week under the direct guidance of his Head Instructor, Professor Lee Lowery, who also encouraged him to find and pursue his own personal specialty within the Martial Arts.

Chris has followed that directive and has pursued the most effective, hands-on training methods for real-world self-defense.  He has trained in over 20 Martial Arts styles, from the ultra-traditional to modern and nontraditional methods, and he continues to explore new directions, on a quest to always improve the value and benefit to his students.

Chris holds a 4th degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, a Lakan rank (Black Belt) in Modern Arnis under the late founder and Grandmaster Remy Presas, a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Mr. Roy Harris, a Black Belt in Budoshin Ju-jitsu under Professor George Kirby, and a Green Glove in Boxe Francaise Savate (French Kickboxing).  Additionally, he is a Level 2 Jeet Kune Do instructor, a Level 1 Filipino Martial Arts Instructor, an Associate Level Grappling Instructor, and has also completed Instructor Training in Krav Maga under Master Rhon Mizrachi.

Education is a major point of focus in Chris’ life.  He completed his Bachelor’s degree (cum laude) in only 3 and a half years.  He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst on an Acorn (merit) Scholarship, where he participated in the Honors Program while studying in two of their top departments:  Japanese Language & Literature (his eventual minor), and Philosophy (with concentrations in Ethics, Epistemology, and Metaphysics).  He was honored to participate in the invitation-only “Dean’s Breakfast” program, in which a small group of students met regularly with the Dean of the College of Humanities & Fine Arts, to discuss University Issues.  He was a competitor on both the Fencing team and the Ballroom Dance Team, where he was vice-president and one of the University’s first male Open Level Latin Dancers.

In the field of education, Chris taught for 3 years as a Middle School Math teacher at the Independent Day School in Middlefield, CT.  He also served for 2 years as the Director of Summer programs at their widely renowned "Summer at IDS" Summer Camp, where he designed, coordinated, and implemented courses in Arts, Academics, and Athletics.

As the Head Instructor of the Modern Self-Defense Center, Chris has taught hundreds and thousands of individuals to improve their personal safety.  In addition to his own students, he has worked with numerous public, private, corporate, government, and university-based groups to help their members become safer and better able to protect themselves.  He designed and taught a Self-Defense Course for Wesleyan University’s Athletics Department for several years, as their only non-faculty instructor.  In 2011, Chris was a featured guest instructor at the New England Modern Arnis Camp.  He is also the author of the book “Knack Self-Defense for Women:  Strategies, Moves, & Everyday Tactics to Gain Confidence & Stay Safe”, which is available at bookstores everywhere.

Lena Pacheco - AMMA Instructor and Co-Creator

Lena Pacheco - AMMA Instructor and Co-CreatorLena Pacheco has made it her mission to improve the way our children are educated, both in our schools and in the Martial Arts.

Lena began studying the Martial Arts with Kenpo Karate at age 6.  Because of her focus and ability, she was groomed for instructorship early, and had years of teaching experience by the time she earned her black belt at 17.  She currently holds the rank of 2nd degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, Level 1 Jeet Kune Do Instructor Certification, and rank in Modern Arnis.  She has been teaching classes for over 10 years, to students ages 4 and up.

At age 8, Lena was selected as a member of the Middletown Kenpo Karate Demo Team.  She became co-captain at age 11, and at 13 was a co-founding member of Team Phoenix, the advanced Teen Demo Team.  The team went on to a number of competitive achievements, including 3rd place showings at the 2005 New England Open and 2006 Twin Towards Classic, 2nd place at the 2011 WKKA American Karate Championships, and a 1st place title at the 2011 WKKA New England Classic Competition.  As she advanced, she also became the coach of the youth demo team, coaching that team to its own 1st place wins.

Lena prioritizes education, both for herself and others.  She graduated from Mount Holyoke College magna cum laude, and in only 3 years.  Lena was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society, and received the Helen Warren Smith Award for outstanding leadership and service.  Immediately following graduation, she participated in the Teach for America program, a group whose mission is to bring high quality educators into areas of high poverty and low resources.

Lena is entering her third year teaching at the Naylor School in Hartford.  Even in her first year, the students in her 3rd Grade class averaged well-above one year’s growth in reading.  She has designed and implemented a number of successful programs, including a behavior management programs for her students, and academic progress tracking systems that she then trained colleagues to use.  She recently participated in a Summer Seminar for Teachers on Existentialism, offered by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Although the program was not offered to elementary educators, Lena’s work was of such exceptionally high quality that an exception was made so that she could be accepted into one of the 16 slots for this program, which took applicants nationwide.

Jose Pacheco - AMMA Instructor and Co-Creator

Jose Pacheco - AMMA Instructor and Co-CreatorJose Pacheco is known equally for his unmatched focus on his students’ development, and his creativity in building training methods for them.

Jose began his study of the Martial Arts at age 5, with Kenpo Karate.  As a result of his self-discipline and work ethic, Jose was invited onto the Youth Demo Team, where he was a member for 12 years.  He captained the team for 3 years, and when he was too old to continue participating as a member, coached the team for three years.  Jose has performed as a stunt man in a number of independent films, and was featured on the Discovery Channel show “Time Warp” in 2009.

He began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2003, while in 8th grade, and the following year when he moved up to High School, he started wrestling.  True to form, he was the only freshman in Connecticut to qualify for the State Wrestling Championships that year.  In the next few months, Jose earned both his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt and his Kenpo Karate Black Belt.  He went on to become Captain of his school’s wrestling team for both his Junior and Senior year, and later became MSDC’s first student promoted to Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Jose now coaches the Combat Athletes class for students preparing to compete in grappling, BJJ, or Mixed Martial Arts.  He is also a 2nd degree Black Belt in Kenpo Karate, a Level 2 Jeet Kune Do Instructor, a Level 1 Filipino Martial Arts Instructor, and an Apprentice Grappling Instructor.

In school, Jose decided to put his creative teaching and love of physical activity to use, and he is currently finishing a degree in Physical Education from CCSU.  On his way there, he earned an Associate’s degree in Human Services, and was simultaneously bestowed the Human Services Award, for his embodiment of the program’s core values.

While going to school, Jose has continued to work with young people both in and out of the Martial Arts classroom:  he has mentored at-risk students in both Hartford elementary and Middletown High schools, and he has worked as a site director for before- and after-school programs for elementary school students in Middletown.  Along the way, Jose has earned certifications for his skills with the Prevention of Bullying, At-Risk Youth Counseling, Special Needs Youth, and Age-Appropriate Health & Fitness.  Jose dedicates himself fully to the work he does with his mentees, in all settings, and he seizes on every opportunity to learn new ways to serve them.

Scott Hoffman - AMMA Instructor and Co-Creator

Scott Hoffman - AMMA Instructor and Co-CreatorScott Hoffman tutored his friends in Middle School, and teaching has been his passion ever since.

Scott began studying Kenpo Karate at age 5 years old, at the Connecticut Kenpo Karate Studio.  At age 11, he became the school’s first ever Junior Black Belt, and was made an Assistant Instructor.  Because of his outstanding ability, an exception was made to the age guidelines for Black Belt (a minimum age of 16 is required) and Scott was allowed to take the grueling exam at age 14, which he passed with flying colors.  He was subsequently promoted to Full Instructor.

Scott currently holds the rank of 3rd degree black belt in Kenpo Karate under Professor Lee Lowery, as well as a 1st degree Black Belt in Modern Arnis under Master Brian Zawilinski, and a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Mr. Roy Harris.  He is a Level 2 Jeet Kune Do Instructor, a Level 1 Filipino Martial Arts Instructor, a Level 1 Knife Instructor under Master Bram Frank, and he is certified as a Crossfit Gymnastics Instructor under the auspices of Mr. Jeff Tucker.

Scott is a highly trained educator, currently completing a Double Major in both the CCSU Teacher Education program for Secondary Mathematics Education and the CCSU Psychology Department with a focus on Child Development and Exceptionalities.  Outside of classes he tutors classmates – he is a Level 2 Certified Tutor with the College Reading & Learning Association.

In 2009, Scott founded Adaptive Movement Parkour – a program to share Parkour techniques and training with kids & adults of all ages.  Parkour is a system of movements that allow you to overcome obstacles in your environment: from methods of walking, running and crawling on all fours (called quadrupedal movement), to vaulting obstacles and climbing up walls, Parkour teaches you to see the things around you not as obstacles, but opportunities.  Scott’s own background in Parkour, Gymnastics, and teaching Martial Arts provided the perfect set of skills to create a safe, structured program that takes students of all ages from novice to skilled practitioner of Parkour (called a Traceur or Traceuse).  Adaptive Movement Parkour (AMP) was the first program of its kind in Connecticut, and continues to draw a large audience from across the state, and beyond.  Scott continues to build and develop AMP, adding new and exciting training methods to this fantastic program.

We're proud of our positive, friendly team and their accomplishments, because it means that your child will receive the highest level of training in all 5 Pillars of the program.
