Triangle Choke Workshop

On Saturday, January 2nd, we kicked off the new year with a FREE 2-hour Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu workshop for all MSDC students on the Triangle Choke.  Here's a quick rundown, for those who missed it:

We began the day with a Minor Control Position and my preferred arm position for opponent's who try to drive forwards or pull backwards.  After drilling this, we spent some time working the finishing mechanics with one leg or both legs, and then drilled compressing the finishing mechanics.  We added to this some anti-slam tactics and drilled again while our partners fed forward, backward, and slamming attempts.  We added some sweeps for the situations when your partner tries to drive across your body, and then a second Minor Control Position for when you can't grab under his leg.  We drilled entering the second Minor CP, as well as finishing from it, and a couple of sneaky tactics for dealing with stubborn partners who stall in this position.  We did a sneaky one-legged finish from this Minor CP, and the "no arm triangle", for when your partner passes with both arms outside your legs.

From there, we went to using the heelhook-grip-kimura as an all-purpose method of dealing with an inside arm that blocks your spin, and we did a series of submissions from that grip, ending in some jedi-mind-control type work that makes partners "magically put themselves into the triangle".  Jose described this as "playing fetch with your dog and pretending to throw the ball, but hiding it behind your back."   From there, we used a similar tool to enter the triangle choke from the double-under guard pass, and then wrapped the workshop with some drilling rounds to put everything together and some Q&A.  For the folks who braved the morning snow flurries, it was a pretty fun way to kick off the New Year!

Crossfit

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is "Functional movements, constantly varied, done at high intensity."

Got that? Good! Next question!

No, really... That's the official definition and it's a good one. But it doesn't really explain what CrossFit is for someone who hasn't tried it or spent some time doing it.

Here's what CrossFit is all about:

CrossFit is Functional Movements

Functional movements are exercises or movement patterns that your body was designed - by millions of years of evolution - to perform. Needless to say, sitting on a padded seat and contracting an isolated muscle group against a weight stack IS NOT a functional movement.

What is functional movement? Squatting, running, lifting a heavy object off the ground, climbing, pulling, pushing, raising a weight overhead. These are the things you do every day in an infinite variety of patterns, combinations and intensities. And these are the things CrossFit uses - in an infinite variety of patterns, combinations and intensities - to make you fitter, healthier and better at whatever it is that you do.

CrossFit is High Intensity

It's VERY high intensity work with a wide variety of movements and equipment. CrossFit intensity is like nothing you've ever experienced before no matter how hard you think you've trained. It's completely scalable though, so anyone can get a good workout.

We have everyone from people with little or no training experience to Black Belts and Marines - and everything in between. Everyone gets a great workout because small class sizes and individual attention allow scaling of the workout and the intensity to appropriate levels.

Once you feel a CrossFit workout you will understand two things:

1) That you haven't been training nearly as hard as you thought you were before you found CrossFit, and...

2) Why your current program wasn't delivering the results you wanted!

CrossFit is Community

CrossFit is a community and a movement as much as it is a way to train. CrossFitters are as serious about training, fitness and results as they are about connecting, sharing and encouraging others. Most people who CrossFit will say that the people they work out with are people they'd be likely to hang out with in real life.

CrossFit is so much fun most people forget it's work!

CrossFit workouts are just plain fun. Something happens when a group of people gets together and they work as hard as they can, push their own limits and encourage each other. CrossFit is the most fun you will ever have working this hard!
